Rajesh Khanna was one of the most successful actors of the 1960s and 70s. He had a string of hit films that made him a superstar overnight. However, by the 1980s, his popularity had started to wane, and he was struggling to find his footing in an industry that was rapidly changing. Then came Swarg, a 1990 release directed by David Dhawan and starring Govinda alongside Khanna. It was a welcome relief for the actor during a period when his career was going through a rough patch.

Recently, one of his co-stars, Arun Bakshi, who played the role of a movie director in Swarg, took a trip down memory lane and recalled working with the first superstar of India. Given that Swarg was one of the last few hits of Kaka’s career, Arun agreed that the late actor was going through some self-doubt when he shot for the movie. In a conversation with Bollywood Thikana, he said, “During Swarg, Rajesh Khanna was going through a downhill period.”

He further added, “He had a few issues with his confidence also at that time. Sometimes, he would reshoot a few shots from the previous day.” When asked if the Bawarchi actor was going through self-doubt, in response, he said, “He was starting to get a little conscious. I had previously worked with him on BR Chopra’s Awam. He was bubbling with joy, even though he was on a downhill, but things were a little different here.”

For the unversed, Swarg became one of the highest-grossing films of the year 1990. Post the success of the David Dhawan directorial, he was seen in a few films, which either performed average or poorly at the box office. Khanna passed away in 2012 at the age of 69.
